1993tris

1993tris is a video game in the puzzle genre originally released in 1993. It is currently playable on DOS.

One of the strangest Tetris games I've come across, 993tris by Korean developer Young Chung, who later founded a very innovative but short-lived shareware company called Ninano Software.

993tris adds dozens of special blocks to the Tetris formula that, unfortunately, make the game more confusing than fun. However, some of the special blocks are quite interesting: especially the 'weapon' blocks that include bombs and guns. The magic blocks are also interesting, although most of the 'spells' are not that different from each other. The game - like all of Ninano's other games - also deserves to be noted for being one of the few that used the high-resolution EGA palette very well. It is also mouse-compatible and has good graphics, although a more extensive help function would have made the game less confusing. Recommended only to die-hard Tetris fans, or amateur developers looking for inspiration for their next falling block game. There are a lot of good ideas here, but too much of a good thing in this case hinders overall enjoyment.
