Description AFL '99

AFL '99 was a football video game released in 1998, exclusively for the Windows PC platform. It was developed by Beam Software and published by Microsoft. Despite being surprisingly well-received for its time, the game's content was hampered by its limited commercial coverage and dated release.

The gameplay in AFL '99 is a fast-paced five-on-five take on traditional American football. Players have to design their own teams, select a strategy, and then tackle, pass, kick, and run their way to victory. With limited play modes, coaching options, and stadiums, AFL '99 is not as feature-rich as subsequent editions in the long-running AFL series, but what it lacks in bells and whistles it has compensated for with some exhilarating action.

AFL '99 is quite realistic in terms of player control and variation. You can alter your team's tactics on the fly to suit your situation, from aggressive plays to a more conservative approach, depending on the situation you’re facing at the time. However, the graphics are a bit rough for modern sensibilities; while the presentational elements are functional, they can't stand up to the games released in the same era. On the other hand, the sound design is surprisingly well done, with the sound of the crowd being accurate and energetic, which helps add some extra realism to the match on the screen.

For what it was, AFL '99 is a solid addition to any football fan’s collection. Even though it lacks the depth of other football titles of the era, the excitement and gameplay of AFL '99 still stands up to this day. It won't be long before players become aware of its timelessness and appreciate the simplicity of Beam Software's sports sim. The game's legacy has been further enhanced over the years as the AFL series continues to inspire and inspire fans of digital sports.
