Ajax is a video game in the action genre developed by Konami Industry Co. Ltd. and published by Konami, Inc. originally released in 1989. It is currently playable on DOS, Amstrad CPC, Arcade, Commodore 64, Sharp X68000, ZX Spectrum.
Released in 1989 by publisher Electronic Arts, Ajax was a DOS game set in a future where players take on the role of a commander sent into space to fight the cyborg enemy. While the game was divided into different sections, the main thing was the long-term strategic elements, where the player had to manage resources, construct corps, monitor enemy movements, and allocate funds as they battled for crisis control.
Players took control of fighters in aerial combat and had several objectives to complete. Attack and defend cities, build and destroy ships, and use resources economically. The game was designed to be challenging and required a deep knowledge of military strategy, and behavourial psychology.
The game was turn based and allowed the player to use a variety of tactics to complete their objectives. Players could utilize zig-zag movements, bombing runs, dog-fighting, and aerial maneuvers to take control of key battlefield posts. The game also featured powerful photon cannons that the player could use to bomb cities or ships, jammers to reduce enemy communication systems, and shields to protect their own fighters and ships.
Graphics in Ajax were top notch for the time, with detailed sprites of fighters, ships, and landscape backgrounds. The soundtrack and sound effects also helped add atmosphere to the game.
Packed with a ton of strategy, intense action, and excellent visuals and sound the game stands as one of the greatest DOS games to this day.
