Alcatraz is a video game in the action genre and published by Probe Software Ltd. originally released in 1984. It is currently playable on Commodore 64.
Released in 1984, Alcatraz quickly became a fan favorite among Commodore 64 gamers. Developed by Infogrames, this action-packed game is set on the infamous island prison of the same name, providing players with a thrilling and immersive experience unlike any other.
The premise of Alcatraz is simple yet intriguing. The player takes on the role of an inmate attempting to escape the notorious prison. However, this is no easy feat as the player must navigate through various obstacles and challenges, all while avoiding the watchful eyes of the guards. With only a limited amount of time to escape, every move must be calculated with precision.
One of the standout features of Alcatraz is its stunning graphics, especially for a game released in the 80s. The attention to detail is evident, from the detailed prison cells to the riveting chase scenes. The game also boasts a hauntingly realistic soundtrack that adds to the overall atmosphere and intensity of the game.
What sets Alcatraz apart from other escape-themed games is its expansive and unpredictable gameplay. The player must explore different areas of the prison, solving puzzles and finding tools to aid in their escape. However, every decision made can have consequences, as players must also manage their character's health and inventory.
As the player progresses through the game, they will encounter various challenges such as locked doors, guard dogs, and security cameras. Each challenge requires a unique approach, making the game both challenging and rewarding. The variety of obstacles and tasks keeps the game engaging and prevents it from becoming monotonous.
Another notable aspect of Alcatraz is its use of real-life historical events as inspiration for the game's plot. Players will come across famous criminals and guards throughout their journey, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the game. This attention to detail and historical accuracy makes Alcatraz a standout game in the Commodore 64 library.
