Avenger

Avenger is a video game in the action genre and published by Deadline originally released in 1997. It is currently playable on DOS.

Avenger is an arcade-style shareware game from Finland for one or two players and is sort of a cross between Galaxian and Space Invaders. The game begins in the year 2254 with a cutscene showing the space station Finlanda and its escort ship in the Alpha Centauri system. A horde of mysterious ships appears out of nowhere and, after a brief battle, the escort ship is destroyed. The player takes the role of a pilot returning to the space station after a vacation. He finds that the station is now the base of many strange ships that attack his ship.

The object of the game is to achieve a high score. The gameplay is very much in the style of Space Invaders. In single-player mode, the left/right cursor keys are used to move the player's ship back and forth, while the right Alt key fires the primary weapon and the right Ctrl key fires a secondary weapon. Enemy ships, however, attack in the style of Galaxian's enemies, swooping across the screen as they attack.

The game maintains a high score table and has two game modes, normal and challenge. The two-player action is side-by-side with both players sharing the keyboard. The challenge mode is only available in the full registered version, which has 55 levels.
