Baikin-Kun's Cockroach Extermination is a video game in the action genre developed by Sony Creative Products Inc. and published by Sony Creative Products Inc. originally released in 1983. It is currently playable on SMC-777.
Baikin-Kun’s Cockroach Extermination places the player in control of Baikin-Kun, a small pest-control specialist charged with clearing a series of infested rooms. Cockroaches scuttle across floors, under furniture, and through narrow passages, turning each screen into a fast-moving extermination problem. The objective is to locate and eliminate every insect before it escapes or the allotted time runs out. Though the subject is comic, the action demands quick reactions and careful observation as the pests change direction without warning.
Baikin-Kun is moved directly through the room with the computer’s controls, allowing him to pursue insects from one side of the screen to the other. Cockroaches do not remain in fixed positions; they race along the available paths and can quickly slip away if approached carelessly. The player must intercept them rather than simply follow behind, positioning Baikin-Kun at the proper distance before using his extermination attack. Each successful hit removes a cockroach from the room, while a missed attempt costs valuable time and may leave Baikin-Kun exposed to another sudden dash.
The playfield is presented from a clear overhead viewpoint, with walls, household objects, and room boundaries arranged to form a compact maze. Furniture and other obstacles divide the floor into lanes, creating corners where cockroaches can be trapped and open areas where they can make rapid escapes. The simple screen layout keeps the action easy to understand, while the changing movement of the insects provides the principal challenge. Later stages increase the pressure with larger infestations, more active targets, and less time for the player to plan each pursuit.
The visual presentation uses bright, sharply defined character shapes against uncluttered backgrounds. Baikin-Kun’s distinctive figure is easy to recognize amid the angular room furnishings, while the cockroaches are rendered as small dark creatures whose movement is immediately visible. The humorous appearance of the characters and the exaggerated scurrying animation give the game a lighthearted tone, even as the number of targets and the speed of play rise. Simple screen transitions mark the completion of each room and keep the extermination operation moving forward.
Short electronic effects accompany Baikin-Kun’s movement, attacks, and successful exterminations, giving every encounter a crisp arcade-like response. The sound is used sparingly, allowing the player to concentrate on the changing positions of the pests while still making each hit feel decisive. Success depends on memorizing the room’s passages, predicting the cockroaches’ routes, and acting without hesitation. Baikin-Kun’s Cockroach Extermination turns an ordinary household nuisance into a brisk test of timing, pursuit, and screen-by-screen accuracy.
