In the early days of home computing, the VIC-20 was a popular choice for many households. And among the plethora of games released for this classic system, one title stood out – Blitz. Originally released in 1981 by Commodore International, Blitz was a fast-paced and addictive top-down shooter game that quickly became a fan favorite.
The objective of Blitz was simple yet challenging – the player controlled a single tank on the bottom of the screen and had to defend against a barrage of enemy tanks, planes, and UFOs. As the levels progressed, the enemies became more numerous and aggressive, keeping players on their toes. The game featured 3D graphics, which was impressive for its time, and added to the immersive experience.
One of the standout features of Blitz was its dynamically changing battlefield. The terrain and obstacles would change with each level, adding an element of unpredictability to the game. This meant that players had to adopt new strategies and constantly adapt to the changing environment in order to survive. The game also had a cooperative two-player mode, where friends could team up to take on the enemy forces together, making it a favorite among social gamers.
Aside from its engaging gameplay, Blitz also had an innovative scoring system. Points were awarded for destroying enemy tanks, planes, and UFOs, but even more points could be earned by shooting down parachuting enemy soldiers as they tried to land on the player's territory. And if players could manage to destroy all the enemies before their tank was destroyed, a bonus round would commence, where they could rack up even more points.
The success of Blitz led to its availability on various other home computers and gaming systems. Its popularity also spawned several sequels, including the critically acclaimed "Blitz II: The Final Battle". The original game's legacy endured, and it was even included as one of the 30 pre-installed classic games on the Commodore 64 Mini, released in 2018.
