Breaker is a video game in the action genre developed by Radarsoft BV and published by Hot-B Co., Ltd. originally released in 1987. It is currently playable on MSX.
In 1987 the MSX gaming community was blessed with the cool and challenging title Breaker. Although it had similarities to Breakout, its array of features and creative layouts kept the player glued to their control like a kid in a candy shop.
To start, the player was placed in a futuristic cubic universe. The walls and floors glowed with a soothing neon light and the main character called 'Garu' expertly bobbed back and forth. The idea was to guide him to the exit without crushing his delicate little frame under the constant onslaught from an onslaught of heavy blocks that slowly consumed the world.
The game even had a unique weapon that allowed the player to disintegrate obstacless. the weapon was an integral part of the game, allowing the player to blaze a path to the exit. To further increase the playability of the game, there were excellent bonuses to be earned. These varied from score points to additional weapons and even extra lives; all of which could be used to maximize the playing experience.
Breaking blocks was only half the battle though, as variety in the levels kept the player hooked. Everything from tunnels to gimmick blocks appeared in the later levels, making planning a route out a challenging affair. Playing Breaker was a truly enjoyable experience as the game hit all the right notes in terms of design, pacing, and challenge.
One iconic feature of the game was its art direction. Every frame was wonderfully presented and boasted vibrant 8-bit visuals and catchy soundtracks. Breaker simply oozed style and sophistication and in many ways was ahead of its time.
Generations of gamers have enjoyed Breaker and it is regularly cited as one of the best games available for MSX. Deliciously challenging and charmingly presented, it is no surprise that Breaker continues to hold a special place in hearts.
