Chess & Backgammon Classics is a video game in the strategy genre developed by Gameloft Software Shanghai Ltd. and published by Gameloft S.A. originally released in 2008. It is currently playable on iPod Classic.
Chess & Backgammon Classics brings two enduring board games to the iPod classic in a compact package designed around the click wheel. From the opening menu, players can select chess or backgammon, choose a match against the computer, or pass the iPod between two players for a traditional head-to-head contest. The straightforward presentation keeps attention on the board, while clear menus make it possible to begin a game quickly during a journey, a break, or a quiet moment at home.
Chess follows the standard rules, with each side commanding a complete set of pieces across an 8-by-8 board. The click wheel moves a selection marker from square to square, and a central button confirms the chosen piece and its destination. Legal moves, captures, checks, and the changing position of the armies are presented directly on the screen. Players can plan an opening, develop their pieces, protect the king, and pursue a decisive endgame, while the computer provides an opponent suited to solitary play. A second player can take the opposite side, turning the iPod into a portable chessboard.
Backgammon offers a different challenge based on movement, risk, and the roll of the dice. Each player moves fifteen checkers around the board toward the home table, using the numbers shown after every throw. Pieces may be advanced along open points, opposing checkers can be hit and sent to the bar, and a player must re-enter a checker before making other moves when the rules require it. The race to bear off all checkers rewards careful use of the dice while leaving room for sudden reversals. The game handles the rolls and movement rules, allowing players to concentrate on selecting the best move.
The visual style is clean and functional, making effective use of the iPod classic’s compact color display. Chess pieces are sharply distinguished against alternating board squares, while the backgammon table uses contrasting points and checkers to keep the playing area readable at a glance. Menus, prompts, dice results, and turn indicators remain uncluttered, and the selected space is clearly marked as it moves under click-wheel control. There is no elaborate story or animated world; the setting is the board itself, presented as a polished digital counterpart to a tabletop game.
Audio is restrained, consisting primarily of menu signals, selection clicks, move confirmations, and other brief effects that provide feedback without interrupting concentration. Matches proceed at the player’s own pace, whether against the computer or another person, and the portable format makes both games easy to pause between turns. Chess & Backgammon Classics consequently offers a focused pair of strategy experiences, combining the patient calculation of chess with the lively uncertainty of backgammon in a form suited to the iPod classic.
