Curses

Curses is a video game in the adventure genre originally released in 1993. It is currently playable on DOS.

This is the best IF play I've played since Trinity, hands down.

Curses is perhaps the most 'literary' IF play to come along in years. I can't say enough good things about this game, so you have no choice but to go out right now and get a copy for yourself. You're an aristocrat getting ready to go on vacation to Paris. All you want to do is find a measly tourist map that you KNOW is in the attic somewhere, and then you're off. Sounds easy, doesn't it? As the story unfolds, you'll find yourself immersed in a hellish adventure that spans both place and time. You'll also find numerous puzzles, from simple (not many) to difficult (many) to frustrating, spread over the years from ancient Egypt to the present. And you'll find literary allusions, references to historical events and legends, and a family history that literally meanders all over the map, but remains centered on ancestral Meldrew Hall in England . . . Fortunately, Curses manages to be original in its puzzles, which will depend largely on the story you can discover with the help of a few references (some of which are even included in the game). The clues for these puzzles can come from surprising sources, which at first seem unrelated. The game's online hint system has been personified in the form of supernatural agencies; however, the clues present are quite cryptic, and if you can't solve a puzzle from the hint, there will be no further clues. These agencies may also fail to recognize some puzzles you may want to ask about, which can be frustrating. Version 12 of the game expands its map and puzzles in many ways from previous versions, which makes this game even more difficult and frustrating. If you can beat Curses without help in this version, then you can credit yourself as a very accomplished player. If not. . . . Don't feel bad, almost everyone else had to ask for help.

Overall, Curses is a modern IF masterpiece that should be played by anyone interested in the genre, especially IF experts.
