Dark Seed was a DOS game released in 1992. Developed by Cyberdreams, the game is a horror-based point-and-click adventure game, and postulates a universe replete with paranormal conspiracies. Through the eyes of the protagonist - Mike Dawson - the player will explore a variety of locations, with the overarching narrative surrounding the Dark Seeds, mysterious alien devices created to corrupt the world with evil and chaos.

The gameplay largely consists of managing and using items and dialogue options to solve environmental puzzles. The setting is the small town of Woodland Hills, wherein lurk a variety of horrific creatures. As the player progresses, the puzzles become more complex and the environment more hazardous. Strikingly, an interest in solving an ancillary, in-game puzzle can be rewarded with clues that help with the narrative.

The graphics of the game were groundbreaking for DOS aspirations, in part due to the contributions of H. R. Giger, a Swiss artist primarily known for his work on the Alien films, who created the art which largely formed the atmosphere and tone of the game. His pen-and-ink works exude a sense of nightmarish dread, as dark and twisted visions of the world materialise around the protagonist.

The dark themes are further enhanced by the game's oppressive soundtrack. The music conveys a feeling of hopelessness and apprehension, using strings and trumpets to great effect. These elements combine to form a genuinely affecting environment, where players must navigate with an understanding of both game mechanics and the narrative.

An engrossing story completes the package. The plot involving the player's character is transformed by figuring out the nature of the Dark Seeds. As the game progresses, more elements of the greater, interconnected conspiracy start to unravel. This combined with the setting and artwork immerse the user in a suspenseful tale of survival and horror.
