Description Dark Wizard

Dark Wizard is a fantasy strategy role-playing game in which the kingdoms of a troubled land must unite against a powerful sorcerer and his forces. Rather than following a single hero, the game presents four different campaigns, each led by a distinct ruler or champion. The chosen leader determines the character of the adventure, the troops available, and the abilities that can be brought to the battlefield. Each campaign offers its own route through the conflict, giving the game considerable variety from one playthrough to the next.

The main action takes place on battle maps divided into squares. Before each engagement, the player arranges a force composed of warriors, archers, spellcasters, and other specialized units. Turns alternate between the player and the enemy, with every unit receiving opportunities to move, attack, cast magic, or use a special ability. Terrain, distance, and positioning are important, since a careless advance can leave a vulnerable unit surrounded. Strong defensive positions can protect weaker troops, while coordinated attacks are needed to overcome heavily armored enemies and powerful monsters.

Victorious units gain experience and become more effective as the campaign progresses. Characters can be equipped with improved weapons and armor, while magical units learn spells for attacking enemies, restoring health, strengthening allies, or hindering opposing forces. Towns and other locations provide opportunities to purchase supplies, recruit assistance, and prepare for the next confrontation. The choice of which units to develop is an important part of the strategy, as a balanced army is generally more dependable than a force built around one type of fighter.

The game presents its world from a high, angled viewpoint, with battlefields displayed in colorful tile-based detail. Forests, mountains, plains, castles, and villages give each map a distinct appearance while also affecting movement and tactics. Characters are represented by compact animated sprites during play, with larger illustrations and story scenes used to convey the personalities of the leaders and the progress of the campaign. Menus are clearly organized, allowing commands, equipment, spells, and unit statistics to be reviewed without interrupting the flow of battle.

The Sega CD format adds a broad musical score and enhanced sound effects to the proceedings. Orchestral themes establish the fantasy atmosphere, while battle music changes the pace during major encounters and climactic confrontations. Magical attacks, weapon strikes, and movement effects provide additional impact to each command. With its multiple story paths, detailed army management, and deliberately paced turn-based battles, Dark Wizard combines the character development of a role-playing adventure with the planning and territorial control of a tactical war game.
