Deadly Racer

Deadly Racer is a video game in the action genre developed by InSide Team and published by Flair Software Ltd. originally released in 1994. It is currently playable on DOS.

A fun action racing game with excellent digitized car and scenery graphics, Deadly Racer makes up for what it lacks in realism and long-term play value with outstanding graphics and sound effects.

There are over 10 cars to choose from, each with its own unique characteristics. From what I've been able to see, the cars are inspired by real-life ones, although the names have been slightly modified (from Porsche to 'Corsche', for example) to obviously avoid potential lawsuits. There are three game modes: practice, individual rally and world rally tournament, although the only difference between them is whether your time is recorded or not, and how many tracks you compete on. You can choose between automatic or manual gear for an additional challenge, though due to the game's strong arcade focus, they don't differ much from each other. Where Deadly Racer really shines is in the graphics department. The cars are nicely digitized, their movements are fluid, the engine sounds are authentic and details such as skid marks, track scenery and weather effects (e. g. rain) are top notch. There are two factors you must contend with on the tracks: damage and fuel levels, both of which are clearly presented on the screen. If you hit the curb too many times or accelerate too hard, the race is over.

Overall, Deadly Racer may not have a big label behind it (in fact, I'm not even sure who wrote the game), but it's certainly worth a look for all racing fans, especially fans of action racing games like Destruction Derby. Be warned, though: the cars are not easily controlled, and the lack of an on-screen track map can be disorienting for a while. Keep an eye on the yellow arrow to see where you're going.
