Demoniak

Demoniak is a video game in the adventure genre developed by Palace Software, Ltd. and published by Palace Software, Ltd. originally released in 1991. It is currently playable on DOS, Amiga, Atari ST.

Released by Loriciel in 1991, Demoniak was a DOS game that combined elements of shoot ‘em up and racing games, making it an innovative and somewhat unique package for the time period. Its unique combination of genres certainly helped it stand out, though its primitive visuals and awkward control system are reminiscent of many games of that era.

The premise of the game is fairly straightforward: players can choose to take on the role of either a pilot or a navigator in a space-faring race across the universe. The player must complete nine levels of increasing difficulty by navigating their ship through treacherous terrain and avoiding or shooting enemies. As the game progresses, upgrades and power-ups can be collected, making the task easier.

What really sets Demoniak apart, however, is its level design and the use of non-linearity. Players must progress through several stages but have the freedom to explore and take different pathways. In addition, the levels contain hidden shortcuts and secret bonuses, which can make the game considerably easier should the player be able to discover them.

The visuals of Demoniak leave much to be desired, as the pixelated graphics look extremely dated by modern standards. The soundtrack is more successful, though, with pulsing and immersive synth-pop accompanying each level as the player navigates their ship.

All in all, Demoniak was an interesting DOS game that is worth checking out for anyone interested in exploring the unique properties of combining different genres. Despite its primitive visuals and awkward control system, its level design, non-linearity, and thumping soundtrack make the game engaging, with plenty of secrets for the player to discover.
