Zeus

The Commodore 64 game Zeus, released in 1983, was a classic and beloved game among 8-bit gaming fans. Players took the role of a hero tasked with saving the Goddess Athena from the clutches of the titular character, the God Zeus. The mission was to traverse through the dangerous labyrinth-style levels as they tried to find and rescue Athena from her prison. Along the way, players had to dodge or battle various monsters, both on the walls of the labyrinth as well as underground. Navigation of the world map was also necessary to progress through the game as players found and collected items needed to help them retrieve Athena. The game itself was relatively easy to master, even for the new or novice video game players. The objectives were straightforward, enemies were easily identifiable, and the world map layout was annoyingly simple, with only a few hidden routes within it. Consequently, the game quickly gained momentum and had its share of die-hard devotees. Gameplay mechanics were built around collecting various items to help in the rescue of Athena. For instance, when travelling inside certain sections of the Labyrinth, players could defeat monsters and pick up certain items, such as keys, which were necessary to progress past certain obstacles. Other items that could be found included weapons for battle, shields to help deflect enemy fire, visible and invisible items that allowed the player to traverse the labyrinth more efficiently, boots to help increase the speed of the character, and potions that granted extra strength to the character. The game also featured a variety of different enemy types. Different levels contained their own unique factions, some of which could only be destroyed using specific weapons found in-game. Boss fights were also a regular feature and would often require special tactics to defeat. Bosses were usually more powerful versions of monsters found throughout the labyrinth levels, and could only be defeated with the right combination of weapons and power-ups. Zeus was a classic Commodore 64 game that was as enjoyable as it was rewarding. With a simple premise, straightforward objectives, and fun and challenging gameplay mechanics, it was a truly timeless piece of entertainment for 8-bit gaming fans.
