Napalm: The Crimson Crisis

Amiga 1998
Fitting the adage that 'old is gold', Napalm: The Crimson Crisis, a late-era shoot 'em up game in the classic Amiga style, appeared in 1998. Developed by Data East, the game catered to fans of the 2D shooter genre with its precise and sprite-based visuals. A side-scrolling shooter, the game pits the player against a cast of characters as they battle their way through several different environments. The 2D sprites offer smooth, detailed visuals, and the game also features detailed animation frames that deliver a crisp and arousing combat experience. Far from being a generic shooter, Napalm: The Crimson Crisis rewards players with combo moves that allow them to attack their enemies more effectively. The story begins when an alien race known as the EGGM forces gain access to Earth’s power sources, prompting the human race to call for help. Thankfully, an elite military unit called Task Force NAPALM is assigned to protect the Earth against the invading EGGM forces. The player is cast in the role of the team leader, Charlie Watts, and must traverse through various firefights, rescue missions, and boss encounters to save the day. If the game's visuals were not enough, the accompanying soundtrack was no less impressive. Composed by Takayuki Iwai, the music is impressive, ranging from military-style marching tracks to hard rock anthems and the traditional Amiga-style sound effects. Controlling a single combat vessel or tanking it out in co-op mode, Napalm: The Crimson Crisis gave strategy enthusiasts a rich and lengthy campaign of destruction. Enemies could be dispatched with a flurry of dashing and shooting maneuvers, with additional bonuses for successful completion of the levels. With the ability to upgrade your tank, allowing for more powerful attacks and shields, the game provides an enjoyable and rewarding experience to all who play it.

The Strangers

Amiga 1997
The Strangers was an action-adventure game released in 1997 for the Amiga home computer. Developed by Elixir Studios, the game was praised by critics and gamers alike for its unique plot and impressive visuals. Players assume the role of Adam, a young man who discovers that his father is involved in a sinister plot to take over the world. As Adam, the objective is to uncover the truth behind his father’s mysterious activities while also battling enemies, solving puzzles and exploring the game world. The Strangers featured a variety of colorful locations, including cities, caves, temples and underground facilities. Each area had its own enemies and puzzles for Adam to battle and solve. While the game world was mostly linear, there was a certain amount of freedom to explore and make your own path. The Strangers was filled with cool effects like rainstorms, snowstorms, and volumetric lighting which greatly enhanced the game’s atmosphere. The Amiga’s hardware was also put to full use with its fast-paced action and impressive visuals. The game also featured a great storyline with plenty of twists and turns. This kept players interested and guessing from start to finish. The voice-acting was also praised, as was the soundtrack which had a distinctive, cinematic feel to it.
