Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance

Windows 2003
Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance is an action game set in the time of the Roman Empire. You take control of Invictus Thrax, a Roman slave, who rose through the ranks to become champion of all gladiators. Favored by the emperor, Invictus was to obtain his freedom. Mysteriously, however, the emperor was assassinated and replaced by a madman named Arruntius. Arruntius, so full of himself, has decided to destroy Rome and replace it with a city called Arruntium. As the game begins, an epic event is staged with Invictus as gladiator. Invictus fights valiantly, but is killed by an unknown and possibly non-human creature. In the afterlife, Invictus meets the sons of Jupiter. They inform him that Arruntius' power comes from the aid of the gods of terror. They task him with eliminating Arruntius and restoring glory to Rome. Gladiator is essentially a 3D action/combat game that includes melee combat with weapons, combos and magic. The action also includes stunts, from sliding down ropes to jumping over traps. There are challenges scattered throughout the game world that, when defeated, unlock magical powers granted by the gods, such as the power of Pluto, which resurrects spirits from the dead to aid you in battle. A unique feature of the game is the execution maneuver. When you are close to the death of certain enemies, you can execute this maneuver which will result in a brutal random cinematic execution by Thrax. The game's graphics attempt to recreate the atmosphere of gladiator movies such as Spartacus. A wide range of characters are featured, from rival gladiators to mythical enemies such as cyclopses, demons and skeleton warriors. Audio features include a mix of smooth and stirring melodies and voice acting.
