Arx Fatalis
Arx Fatalis is a role-playing video game for the Microsoft Windows platform, released in 2002. Developed by Arkane Studios, the game is set in a world where magic is commonplace and technology is all but forgotten.
The player takes on the role of an unnamed hero, who has been imprisoned deep within the bowels of the castle of Arx Fatalis. While attempting to escape, the hero discovers that the castle is under siege by an unknown force, and must uncover the secrets of the castle while also trying to find a way out.
Arx Fatalis is a first-person game, with an emphasis on puzzle-solving and exploration. Combat is also a key element of the game, with the player using a variety of weapons and magic to defeat enemies. The game world is fully 3D, and features a day-night cycle and weather effects.
Arkane Studios released a sequel to Arx Fatalis, entitled Arx Fatalis 2, in 2009. However, the game was not well-received by critics, and was a commercial failure.
