Abandoned Places: A Time for Heroes
In this role-playing game, you embody four heroes whose mission is to save their world, Kalynthia, from the evil archmage Bronagh. Most of the time, as you explore the world, the game is displayed in a 2D top-down view. This gives you a lot of freedom: there is more to do than sticking to the main quest. The cities have a static interface where you reach the desired place by clicking on the corresponding symbol, for example, a church to heal yourself or a sage to get advice.
During dungeon crawls, the game switches to a 3D view and plays out similarly to Dungeon Master. As usual in this type of game, you see the dungeon in a small window while your characters appear on the right side of the screen. The dungeon sequences are completely in real time. This includes combat, which basically consists of clicking on a character's weapon or magic spell and then clicking on the monster. After each use of a weapon/spell you have to wait a certain amount of time until you can use it again.
Piracy on the High Seas
In Piracy on the High Seas the player takes the role of three men who have to retrieve the Golden Chalice of Balance to return the piece to the world (Norse setting with some fantasy elements such as magic). However, they need information on where to go and this is only available to rich people. So most of the game is devoted to getting enough money by roaming the sea freely and creating a trading organization. This part of the game offers no surprises: buy cheap in one place and send it to another to sell it at a good price. The profits can be invested in upgrading the ship, hiring crew members and establishing trade routes with up to four other ships. These are independently routed to the city in question, but the sell-buy process must be done manually.
The game also offers a variety of mini-games, which often start after a random encounter with a pirate ship: one-on-one cutlass fights with pirates, sea fights against pirates or a huge octopus, and games of chance. The main story, after receiving the following information, leads to an isometric dungeon crawl with action-based combat. During saber fights, one of the crew members has to risk his life - when no more are hired, the protagonists have to fight. And since one of them is necessary to enter the dungeon, his death can make it impossible to finish the main mission. In addition to mini-games, most of the gameplay takes place on the sea map from top to bottom; land exits are based entirely on the menu.
