Battle Wrath

DOS 1997
Battle Wrath is a lackluster one-on-one SVGA fighting game that was sold as shareware briefly in 1995 - the first fighting game to use SVGA. The plot is completely standard: after death, great warriors were given a new life. now they are locked in an eternal competition, fighting each other to be declared the best of the best - ruler of the Battle Lords. Your job, of course, is to choose your champion and fight against other Battle Lords to become the ruler. The best thing about Battle Wrath is the somewhat inventive design of the warriors. There are historical, mythical and futuristic fighters, each with their own special moves. The controls are easy to learn: you 'charge up' your power and then press the appropriate keys to trigger the special moves. Some moves are documented and some are not, so players have to find them. A nice feature is that you can adjust the speed of the game according to your preferences or the speed of your machine. The graphics are SVGA with ray-tracing and are adequate, although the 2D/cut-out explosions on cardboard look downright ugly. All in all, Battle Wrath is an 'acceptable' fighting game that won't turn heads of fans of Mortal Kombat or similar beat 'em ups. The game is tougher than average, but the limited number of fighters, special moves and stages doesn't offer much replay value. The lack of features like combo hits that have become standard in the genre is also disappointing, as it makes the game much more simplistic. It's worth a look only if you collect these types of games.
