Free D.C!
In one of the most disappointing executions of a good game concept, Free D.C.! tries to be too many things at once, but falls flat with a banal plot, frustrating and out-of-place combat sequences, and poor writing.
The game starts off well enough with a cliché, but not an overused one: you are a 'specimen' in the 'Human Zoo' around Capitol Hill in DC, where all the humans left after the robots took over the world reside. You have to talk to various people to find out who or what is killing the remaining specimens.
The first impression upon seeing the introduction is quite positive: the game has a unique 'plasticine' style resulting from the collaboration with the famous plasticine team of Will Vinton, who created the creatures for the game. Unfortunately, it all goes downhill from there, as everything that could go wrong with this game ended up going wrong.
After putting up with the insipid banter of your fellow robots, the horrible digitized voices and bad writing, and the countless fight sequences that add no value except to lengthen the game's short length, you'll wonder if the designers played their own game, and how dare they call it an 'adventure' when the puzzle solving is practically non-existent.
Overall, a very marginal game that might deserve to be forgotten after all. If you want a good game in the same style, play Manhunter: New York or look for a copy of Dreamworks' Neverhood CD-ROM. A very disappointing end to Cinemaware's stellar run.
