Das Erbe

DOS, Amiga 1991
Das Erbe, released in 1991, stands as a distinctive entry in the realm of DOS adventure gaming. Developed by the small German company, K. E. M. Games, the title is a fascinating blend of storytelling, exploration, and puzzle-solving that captures the essence of the early ‘90s gaming landscape. Set in a hauntingly atmospheric environment, Das Erbe places players in the role of a character navigating the eerie and mysterious occurrences surrounding a family estate steeped in dark secrets and ancient lore. The narrative revolves around the protagonist’s quest to uncover the truth about their heritage, which is enshrouded in ominous legends and family folklore. The game cleverly unfolds this story through a series of meticulously crafted dialogues, providing players with the necessary tools to unravel intricate puzzles that unlock various chapters of the protagonist’s past. The immersive storytelling heightens player curiosity, encouraging exploration of every corner of the vast estate, from dimly lit corridors to overgrown gardens, each location filled with hints and clues that contribute to the overarching narrative. Gameplay mechanics in Das Erbe are characteristic of classic point-and-click adventures, where players interact with the environment to solve puzzles that require keen observation and creative thinking. The game’s interface, while simple, allows for intuitive navigation and interaction, enabling players to collect items and engage with non-player characters, who drop hints and background revelations about the estate’s hidden history. The atmospheric sound design and evocative visuals complement the gameplay, creating an engaging sensory experience that pulls players deeper into the enigmatic world. Critically, Das Erbe has garnered attention for its unique German cultural elements, which may not be as prominent in mainstream gaming of that time. The game exhibits a deep appreciation for folklore, artfully weaving local myths into the unfolding drama. It seamlessly combines narrative depth with puzzle intricacies, ensuring that players remain engaged while piecing together the fragmented history of the estate—a challenge that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant. As the gaming industry has evolved, Das Erbe remains a poignant reminder of the potential for storytelling within interactive experiences. Its combination of compelling narrative, engaging gameplay, and cultural specificity has cemented its place as a beloved gem among enthusiasts of retro gaming. For those lucky enough to have experienced it during its heyday, Das Erbe signifies a nostalgic journey into a well-crafted, mysterious world that continues to inspire curiosity and exploration.

Sony Game

DOS 1990
Probably one of the worst promotional games ever made, Sony Game is a quaint platformer starring everyone's favorite Walkman... the SONY one, of course. It's a typical platformer in every respect, except that every now and then you'll find a SONY store where you can check out the latest SONY Walkman models and their specs. Being a Walkman (in the most literal sense of the word) is bad enough, but it's worse when you have to suffer through dozens of highly repetitive levels and even more boring enemies (what can Walkman enemies be, by the way?). It's fine for a few laughs or if you want to browse the SONY catalog in the most unusual way. Otherwise, it's not worth anyone's time, and there are much better promotional games.
