Hybris is a classic vertical scrolling shooter that has its roots in arcade games such as Capcom's 1942.
The story takes place in the year 2461 A. D. and concerns a lost Earth colony on an alien planet known as Jurica. The space station Hybris is unable to establish communications with the colony. Therefore, a scout ship must be sent on a rescue mission over this seemingly deserted expanse to find the colonists, and subsequently return them to safety. Warning: Incoming hostiles . . . . !
The game is for one, and the player can choose between two Ace pilots - J. P. Maverick or K. Lovett. The player navigates the scout ship around the screen at will. The objective is to shoot everything that moves, while overcoming enemy fire. You have to contend with waves of spiraling aliens that move through the play area from multiple directions, somewhat akin to Galaga, as well as stationary turrets and other surface installations that drop projectiles periodically.
Sometimes, an additional energy cube will appear on the screen. When fired by the player, it will reveal an upgrade function for the scout ship's strength. Each subsequent upgrade that is collected will progressively strengthen the ship (which is seen in real time), in turn increasing the firepower. The scout ship can also be upgraded on the fly in unique power configurations attributed to the bonus cube collected. You also have control of a smart bomb function that can alleviate tricky situations.
