Code Maker

VIC-20 1981
Code Maker is a classic game that was released in 1981 for the VIC-20 computer. This game was developed by Commodore and was one of the first games to be released for this platform. The VIC-20 was a popular home computer at the time and Code Maker quickly became a favorite among its users. The premise of Code Maker is simple but addictive. The game is essentially a variation of the popular game Mastermind, where players have to try to guess a secret code in order to win. In Code Maker, players take on the role of a computer hacker trying to break into a secure database. The players must use logic and deduction to figure out the code and successfully hack into the database. What made Code Maker stand out from other games of its time was its intuitive and user-friendly interface. The game was designed to be accessible to players of all ages and skill levels. The colorful graphics and simple instructions made it easy for anyone to pick up and play. This was a huge advantage of the game as it appealed to a wider audience and contributed to its popularity. As players progressed through the game, the codes became more challenging, keeping players engaged and motivated to beat their high scores. This made for a never-ending cycle of fun and competition. The game also had a two-player mode, where players could take turns creating and guessing codes, adding an element of social interaction to the game. One of the most intriguing aspects of Code Maker was its use of binary code. The codes in the game were made up of 1s and 0s, adding an educational element to the game. Players not only had fun, but they also unknowingly learned about binary code and its applications. This was a clever move by Commodore to incorporate learning into gameplay. Code Maker also had a feature that allowed players to create their own codes for others to try and crack. This feature gave players the opportunity to be the ‘code master’ and challenge their friends and family. It added a level of customization and creativity to the game, making it even more engaging.

In the Chips

A business simulator that puts you in charge of a Silicon Valley software company: you've invested $100,000 in cash into the business, and now you get to call the shots. Your goal is to expand your software market share while taking on a competing company (run by the computer or another human player). Each turn represents a fiscal quarter, and both companies set a business strategy. This is done by walking your character between the different company buildings: in R&D you allocate the development budget for up to five potential products (games, judging by their titles). In Manufacturing, stock levels are set, and in the Sales office, retail prices are adjusted. Then there's Advertising, which will (literally) reach out for quotes. These factors, along with your opponent's tactics, will determine your performance in the marketplace: when the next quarter arrives, you'll receive a financial report and can redivide the pie accordingly. To win, you will have to balance supply and demand, read the market correctly and counter your competitor's strategy. The duration of the game (in quarters) is adjustable, and there is also a Monopoly mode, where both sides can try to corner the market by pricing below cost.

Pipes

Pipes is an educational game for children. Your mission is to figure out the shortest and cheapest way to connect the neighborhood to the water supply.
