Five-A-Side Soccer

Amiga 1998
Five-A-Side Soccer arrived on the Amiga at a moment when arcade energy and club atmosphere still defined home computers. Released in 1998, it offered a brisk alternative to the more stately football sims of the era, trading granular realism for instinctive play and shared laughter. The game leans into a compact pitch, bright jerseys, and a chorus of crowd noise that feels almost tactile. Players seize the ball with quick flicks, sprint through narrow lanes, and collide with satisfying thuds that remind you of a real street game. On the controls side the title dispenses a tactile and forgiving system. A single button along with a directional nub handles movement, while shot and pass commands unleash quick sequences that reward timing over brute force. Four players can link up in cooperative action, or a pair can hold the line while two others chase glory on the opposite flank. The five a side format yields crowded midfield scrambles, brisk give and go exchanges, and rapid counter attacks that turn every minute into a miniature derby. Visuals pulse with neon gloss and chunky sprites that pop against the synthetic grass. Animations are crisp enough to convey momentum during a sprint, yet simple enough to keep the action legible on crowded screens. Sound design embraces punchy percussion, whistle bursts, and a chorus of cheering voices that morph into a stadium lullaby during quiet moments. The tactic of color coding players by team helps newcomers track teammates during frantic sequences, while the silhouette style keeps the frame clear and dazzling. Five-A-Side Soccer also acts as a social glue, because the screen is a magnet for shared bragging and mutual blunders. Opponents can be ferocious on the joystick, yet forgiving enough to allow stylish runs to blossom. There are cups, leagues, and quick play modes that entice repeated sessions, each offering a different rhythm and challenge. Its pacing never drags, and the balance between defense and attack feels tuned to quick decision making rather than patient build ups. The experience rewards improvisation and cheeky feints. The title sits as a curious time capsule from the late Amiga era, a period when developers still crafted bold bite sized sports with personality. It may not boast the depth of fuller sims, yet the gleeful chaos and approachable learning curve drew crowds into living rooms and shared monitors. If you crave a brisk, unscripted football fix that favors speed over strategy, Five-A-Side Soccer deserves a run on an emulator or a classic machine, where laughing at mistakes becomes part of the game.

Football Glory

DOS, Amiga 1995
Football Glory is an interesting clone of Sensible Soccer that falls far short of that classic due to bland gameplay and poor controls. The game offers many options, from the World Cup to European championships to national leagues. You can even edit your own club and create your own leagues/cups with as many teams as you want and play against the computer or your friends. Developer Croteam set out at the time to challenge the then mighty Sensible Soccer with proven gameplay improvements such as bicycle kicks, back touch and many other features. However, it is in the humor department where Football Glory triumphs, with many amusing features, such as the ability to get sent off and hit the referee, the appearance of streakers(!) during the match, and stretcher-bearers rushing to carry away injured players. The game's humor, while making it very unique and engaging, cannot save it from poor controls and gameplay: the computer's AI is very poor, as it will choose strange strategies that will lead to easy victories. Still, Football Glory is a good choice if you don't want to spend years mastering a soccer game, or want an easy challenge. Unfortunately, because Sensible Software threatened to take legal action over copyright, Football Glory was never developed. Note: In 1998 Croteam released Football Glory as freeware, to the joy of soccer fans around the world. However, their server is very slow, so don't hesitate to download it from this site:).

Serious Sam: The First Encounter

Windows 2001
Serious Sam: The First Encounter is a classic first-person shooter game that was released in 2001 by Croatian game developer Croteam. This game quickly became a fan favorite, attracting players with its fast-paced action, intense gameplay, and absurd humor. Set in ancient Egypt, the game follows the story of Sam “Serious” Stone, a mercenary who is sent back in time to stop an alien invasion. The game has gained a cult following over the years and is still beloved by players today. One of the biggest draws of Serious Sam: The First Encounter is its non-stop action. From the very first level, players are thrown into an intense battle against hordes of enemies. The game features an impressive variety of weapons, from traditional rifles and shotguns to more unique weapons like the Cannonball gun and the Serious Bomb. Players must strategically use these weapons to take down enemies and survive the waves of attacks. The fast-paced gameplay keeps players on their toes and creates an adrenaline-fueled experience. Apart from the action, what sets Serious Sam apart from other first-person shooters is its unique humor. The game is filled with witty one-liners and over-the-top situations that will have players laughing out loud. This humor perfectly complements the frantic nature of the game, adding a lighthearted element to the otherwise intense gameplay. The game also features hidden Easter eggs and references to popular culture, making it even more entertaining for players. The level design in Serious Sam: The First Encounter is another aspect that sets it apart from other games in the genre. The game takes players through various locations, including ancient temples, deserts, and even a spaceship. Each level is intricately designed and offers a different challenge for players. The game also features secret rooms and hidden areas that reward players with health or ammo, adding another layer of exploration to the game. The visuals of Serious Sam are also worth mentioning. For a game released in 2001, the graphics are surprisingly detailed and well-designed. The environments are colorful and vibrant, and the enemy designs are intimidating and imaginative. The game also features impressive cinematic cutscenes that add depth to the story and keep players engaged. One of the biggest strengths of Serious Sam: The First Encounter is its replayability. Even after completing the game, players can go back and play through the levels again with different difficulty settings. The game also features multiplayer modes, allowing players to team up with friends or compete against each other in various game modes.

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter

Windows 2002
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter picks up where The First Encounter left off. While on his way to Mental in the Sirian spaceship he discovered in ancient Egypt the ship collides with something and crashes in Mesoamerica. With the ship damaged beyond repair, Sam finds himself once again trapped in hostile territory. But it seems that the Sirians left a second backup spaceship somewhere on Earth. To get to the ship you have to fight your way through hordes of Mentals attacking in large numbers and several waves through the ancient temples of Mesoamerica and Babylon to finally reach Medieval Europe where the final boss Mordekai the Summoner awaits you. The game offers several new weapons such as a chainsaw, a flamethrower, a sniper rifle and a device called the Serious Bomb that will kill all enemies within a certain radius. New enemies include Cucurbito the Pumpkin a creature that wields a chainsaw, mercenaries and Zorg commanders armed with rifles, large creatures called Zumb'uls that wield a twin stone launcher and Fiendian Reptilian Demons that attack with fireballs at long range. In 2010 the game received a high definition remake.
