The Dark Heart of Uukrul
Arguably one of the best RPGs ever, this game has managed to be excluded from all Hall of Fame lists. Dark Heart of Uukrul competes with the best RPGs.
Turn-based combat with great (albeit difficult) puzzles and original spells are just the beginning. Your mission is to collect all the fragments of the evil heart of Uukrul to destroy it. There are many innovations in the game that, unfortunately, are not well known, as the game was poorly received in stores.
For starters, the writing, though sparse, is excellent. You'll periodically find clues or magical writings from the late sorceress Mara, which are crucial to solving puzzles and measuring your progress - and what puzzles there are! To illustrate how original and unique Uukrul's puzzles are, let me give you an example: in one area, you'll come across strange puzzles on different walls. After looking at the automatic map and comparing the positions of the puzzles to the map, you'll realize that the area is a giant crossword puzzle, and the puzzles are clues to each word in the crossword! When I discovered this, I shook my head in amazement at the ingenuity of the designers. Typical dungeon puzzles aside:)
The game also shines in every other aspect: plenty of spells and prayers for your mage and cleric, lots of tricky monsters and loot, and an excellent auto map and teleporter. The only disappointment I had with the game was the fact that character creation was somewhat weak. But considering how difficult the game gets in the later stages, maybe that's for the best.
Uukrul is a must play for any dungeon master or anyone remotely interested in the genre.
