7th Legion
7th Legion is a real-time strategy game released for Windows in 1997. It was developed by Epic Games and published by MicroProse, and gained popularity for its unique blend of futuristic science fiction and traditional strategy gameplay. The game is set in the year 2067, where a post-apocalyptic world is divided into two factions - the 7th Legion and the Chosen. As the player, you take on the role of a commander of the 7th Legion, fighting against the oppressive rule of the Chosen.
What sets 7th Legion apart from other real-time strategy games at the time is its focus on resource management. Rather than solely relying on brute force and military tactics, players must also manage and allocate resources wisely in order to sustain their army and upgrade their technology. This adds an extra layer of strategic thinking to the game, making it more engaging and challenging.
The gameplay of 7th Legion is divided into two modes - the strategic map and the combat map. On the strategic map, players can oversee and manage their base, assign tasks to units, and research technologies. It also allows for scouting and expanding your territory. Once you encounter an enemy faction, the game shifts to the combat map where you must engage in real-time battles utilizing your units and technologies.
One of the most unique aspects of 7th Legion is the use of cyborg soldiers. Players have the ability to build and upgrade cyborg units, which are stronger and more efficient than regular human soldiers. These cyborgs can also be repaired and upgraded, making them a valuable asset in the battlefield. However, with great power comes great responsibility, as cyborgs require a significant amount of resources to produce and maintain.
In addition to its strategic gameplay, 7th Legion also boasts impressive graphics for its time. The game features detailed and realistic 3D environments, with different terrains and weather conditions that affect gameplay. The in-game soundtrack also adds to the immersive experience, blending futuristic electronic beats with intense battle music.
Jazz Jackrabbit
One of the best platform games ever to appear on your PC screen, Jazz Jackrabbit was a very successful platform game by shareware standards, released by Epic Megagames in 1993 and spawning a series of well-received sequels.
Similar in style to Earthworm Jim, but released years before that classic, Jazz Jackrabbit features an adorable cartoon protagonist, 4-button joystick support, well-designed levels, excellent graphics and fun animated sequences. In the role of Jazz, the cute bunny hero, you will travel from planet to planet to catch up with a villainous alien turtle who is bent on destroying the world. While the game's expansive levels, secret areas and clever power-ups add up to addictive gameplay, for me the best part of Jazz is the bonus levels, which are all presented in 3D, in contrast to the 2D side-scrolling view. These 3D levels force you to race at full speed around a race track within a set time limit to accumulate bonus points. Attractive cartoonish graphics and a great sense of humor make Jazz Jackrabbit possibly the most charming platforming superhero... until Earthworm Jim came on the scene. Highly recommended, and be sure to check out the game's sequels on this site as well.
