Deep Fortress is a side-scrolling shareware. The player controls a helicopter and must fight through the heavy defenses of a fortress to rescue captured high-ranking officials held inside.
The player's helicopter has several powerful weapons, including a machine gun and several types of missiles. All weapons share the same ammunition reserve, and each weapon requires a certain amount of ammunition per shot. Ammunition can be replenished by collecting power-ups scattered throughout the level. Armor is repaired in the same way.
There are seven levels in the game, but only the first one is available in the shareware version. In each level, the player's mission is to storm one of the fortress bunkers and destroy the shield generator, in order to gain access to the next bunker. Opposing forces include helicopters, ground vehicles and enemy troops.
