Fun Columns

The Apple IIgs game Fun Columns, released in 1991, was a demanding arcade hit that soon became a treasure trove for Apple IIgs gamers. It utilizes the computer's unique features to drive the game forward, encouraging players to master the software. With its simple hexagonal tiles, Fun Columns offers a fast, abstract puzzler experience that will keep players on their toes. The goal of the game is to create adjoining paths of whirling bits of columns, connecting them until they are eliminated. Whenever a column is created, the board has shifted and the points awarded for deductions increase exponentially. The game doesn't end when all the columns have been eliminated—seconds remaining are tallied, and that score is evaluated at the end of the game. Further satisfaction is earned when playing for long enough to unlock the game's head-spinning bonus levels. Depending on the difficulty chosen, the board shifts in increasingly complicated ways as the game goes on. Those familiar with the game will be in for a treat with Fun Columns for its enhanced graphics. Complete with over 8,000 colors and resolution of 640x200, the game looks quite a bit different compared to first time players. Additionally, the sound effects add a unique nuance to the game's potency, going beyond basic 8-bit beeps. One amusing element of Fun Columns is that the game has a built-in clock mode: players can set a timer when they start and watch it run out during the game. This encourages racers to complete as many levels as possible before the time is up. All in all, Fun Columns is a classic game with a deceptively straightforward concept that rewards skill and ensures replay value.
