Liverpool
A mediocre soccer game based on England's most popular soccer team in the mid-1980s (before David Beckham and his Manchester United teammates caught on), Liverpool mars the club's prestigious name with bland graphics, blocky player characters, and just plain nothing.
The game offers the usual gameplay options: practice mode, single match or F.A. Cup tournament. Unlike most other soccer games, you can only manage one team: Liverpool, of course. This has its pros and cons. On the plus side, you can see digitized photos and read brief biographies of all the team members, which are ranked according to strength, fitness, aggressiveness, and skill percentages. However, these individual stats are moot in reality, as all the players look alike on the field, making it very difficult to know who you're passing the ball to.
Fans of management soccer simulators will also wince at the extreme lack of options in Liverpool: formation and lineup choices are the only control you have over your team, aside from the cumbersome arcade-style control that is poorly implemented. The golden days of Liverpool may be behind them, and it's a shame that the only game made as a tribute to them can't help keep the memory alive.
For those who want to know how great John Barnes and Ian Rush were at the height of their careers, watching old videos will be far more enlightening than playing this disappointing game that offers nothing new to the genre, apart from a few digitized photos of former soccer greats.
