Engineering Jones and the Time Thieves of DSPea

DOS 1991
Engineering Jones and the Time Thieves of DSPea is a promotional computer game of historical significance: it was the first time a computer game was used to introduce a new product. In this case, two new digital signal processing products from Harris Semiconductor. Designed by Prentice Associates, a company specializing in computer marketing tools, the game was sent to more than 15,000 imaging system designers in the United States. The result was very positive: the game generated an 11% response rate (versus the company's usual 3% rate) and more than 1,700 leads within a few months. That must mean that the game is very good, right? Well, not exactly. Engineering Jones is not an excellent game in any sense of the word, but it is quite interesting. The game portrays a futuristic world deprived of the benefits of Harris' new DSP technology, and your job is to help Engineering Jones save the planet's DSPea technology (i. e. Harrris' new products) from being plundered by the evil Time Thieves. As the scenario unfolds, you will be introduced to the features, benefits and applications of the new Harris products. The gameplay itself is nothing more than a glorified maze game, but some mini puzzles are quite fun to solve. Last but not least, the quirky and detailed graphics are reminiscent of classic Exxos games like Captain Blood and Kult, so fans of those games will find the game a bit nostalgic. It's worth a look at least for its historical value, and if you ever wonder what 'digital signal processing' means, here's a fun way to find out. Note: the game's latest marketing gimmick is that, once you solve the last puzzle, you can fill out an answer card that will automatically enter you into a drawing to win a camcorder.
