Congo: The Movie - Descent into Zinj
Congo is an adventure game adapted from the 1995 movie of the same name. The plot revolves around the search for a diamond that presumably has enough power to change the world of telecommunications as we know it. On a mission given to you by Travis, the head of TraviCom, you are sent to the contemporary Congo to retrieve the diamond and find out what has happened to another expedition led by Dr. Karen Ross.
As you arrive at your destination, more and more pieces of the puzzle begin to fit into a complete picture as even more questions arise. Who are the monstrous gorillas that populate the area? What is the meaning of all the Egyptian writings found at the site? What drives Amy, a sentient gorilla capable of speech, to help them? And most importantly: how to survive and get hold of the precious diamond and, perhaps, save the unfortunate souls of the first expedition in the process.
The gameplay is that of a classic inventory-based adventure. Although at times the game deviates from the formula. It is mostly about the sequences where the player must operate a multifunctional laptop-like device. Using it, the player can analyze visual images for clues, record audio, track search signals on the map, and examine additional information from files downloaded from the TraviCom network. Other notable features of the game include navigation on a river by boat and a maze-like sequence in the middle of the game.
Visually, the game is similar to the first-person adventure games of its era and has its roots in Myst. It contains the same pre-rendered 3D backgrounds with the smoothly animated transition sequences and the characters done in live-action, except Amy who is also executed in pre-rendered 3D.
The game is supplied with the trailer for the aforementioned 1995 film.
