War Times

Windows 2004
War Times, released in 2004, is a tactical turn-based strategy video game that pits players against each other in WW II battlefields. Set in Europe and North Africa, players command either Axis or Allies forces in historic and not-so-historic engagements of two of the conflicts of World War II. At its core, War Times is a real-time, tactical combat game with an expansive range of strategic options and a familiar point-and-click interface. In the campaign mode, missions revolve around objectives that are defined either in terms of territory or battle-driven goals, such as the conquest of a specific region, the capture of a particular enemy installation, or the destruction of enemy forces. War Times features a wide range of weapons, literally hundreds of units, and an array of land, sea, and air forces. This complexity of weaponry creates an intense level of decision-making as players must assess terrain, select appropriate forces and resources, and utilize terrain bonuses. In addition, there are research capabilities and unit-level specializations, such as an Artillery unit that can fire multiple rounds with a single salvo, to provide further strategic options. The game also provide realistic weather effects, such as rain and snow, and their impacts on course of battle. The changing seasons, night/day cycles, and various regional weather patterns, all add to the strategy. Conversely, War Times has some technical shortcomings, including occasional graphics glitches and limited audio design. There can also be slowdown problems and difficult navigation in the interface. Despite these issues, the overall game play and design of War Times has received praise from many gaming reviewers. Causing it to be seen as a deep and satisfying turn-based strategy option for fans who are also seeking a robust mixture of historical settings.
