The Spy's Adventures in Europe

DOS 1987
Polarware's short-lived Spy's Adventure series of educational games pioneered an original concept that would be popularized by Carmen Sandiego. In one of the most interesting anecdotes in gaming history, Brøderbund released the first Carmen Sandiego game just two months before this title (Mark Peclszcerski, designer and founder of Polarware, certainly didn't think it was a mere coincidence - read his thought-provoking article on the Magic Tree site below). Regardless of whether Brøderbund 'borrowed' Polarware's concept for his successful series, there is no doubting the game's similarities to Carmen Sandiego. The protagonist is a spy chasing the evil Dr. X across the continent. When you reach a new country, you can buy or get clues about the villain's location, and consult the dossier on that country. If you paid attention to the dossiers, the clues would direct you to the right destinations and, ultimately, to Dr. X's hideout. Despite the inferior graphics, the game has an advantage over Carmen Sandiego: there are 2 excellent multiplayer modes in which up to 6 players can cooperate together or compete against each other in their pursuit of Dr. X. Add to this the well-written briefs, interesting clues and some strategic elements (e.g. you have limited money with which to buy clues), and Spy's Adventure games are excellent edutainment titles highly recommended for children and adults alike. thumbs up!
