Barkonid

Atari 8-bit was considered one of the most revolutionary and impressive gaming consoles at the time, and amongst its innovative game catalog, Barkonid released in 1986 was no exception to the rule. Developed by Interphase Inc. with remarkable 8-bits audio and graphics production, it quickly became an iconic sensation. Barkonid subscribed to the shoot ‘em up genre and required players to traverse their space ship across outer space and fight off an extraterrestrial invasion. Players needed to dodge incoming waves of ships and make way through a hailstorm of laser bolts and meteorites set to derail their mission. With exhilarating gameplay and an incredibly psychedelic color palette, the game became a true classic. Barkonid boasted an impressive frontal-view display giving players a distinctive third-person perspective of the action. This birds-eye view allowed players to anticipate incoming obstacles and plan strategic maneuvers, while still enjoying a rewarding combat experience. All sound effects were accurately placed and the background noise was a genuine piece of nostalgia filling in gaps from gamers’ lack of high-fidelity graphics. In an attribute to the remarkable level of difficulty of this game, levels increased with every moment and no continues were allowed - a challenge requiring players to master this screen or restart completely. Despite some minor technical issues, Barkonid was an instant success, giving life to the vibrant 8-bit era and setting a new record of longevity on the Atari 8-bit market. Barkonid was an iconic landmark of classic gaming; providing players with an absorbing, arcade-style, shoot ‘em up experience, requiring side-scrolling, tactical finesse - offering a touchstone of ingenuity for generations to come.
