Angst: A Game of Urban Survival
Angst: A Game of Urban Survival is a shareware single-player adventure game based on the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
The game uses a DOS window to frame and run the game. The player starts the game and is shown a scene that places him at a freeway junction on the outskirts of the city. He then uses the menu bar to select an attitude with which to approach the scene and an object; attitudes range from Conservative to Green, while objects range from an uzi to a mint.
Next, the player activates their mouse and clicks on the image, anywhere that is colored yellow is a link to something, sometimes the link doesn't do much, for example, in 'The Fun Zone' clicking on another character brings up a message 'You refrain from romance because you don't know your partner's antibody status'. However, other hot spots open up other scenes and this is how the player progresses in the game.
What is the objective of the game, who knows? The game documentation is deliberately cryptic and only says.
'Goal of the game: you determine it. Characters and scenes may give you a clue'.
but the manual also makes it clear that it is possible to win, that it is also possible to die, and that it is possible to get stuck by not possessing the right object in the right place.
