Gemstone Warrior
Gemstone Warrior is an action game with adventure elements. Players make their way through a subway catacomb, doing three things at once. First, they have to find five pieces of a precious stone, scattered throughout the maze. Secondly, they have to avoid being killed by the catacomb's guardians. Finally, they have to draw a map of the game, because the place is so big that it is easy to get lost. Once the Gemstone Warrior has collected the five pieces of gemstone, he has to return to the point where the game started.
The hero has to go underground because of the demons. These stole the precious stone from the humans, because they were jealous of the good magic it brought to mankind. They broke it and scattered it around their dungeon, to hide it.
This game is not just a 'shoot-em-up'; it has many of the characteristics of that style of gameplay, but it also gives players time to think. It includes a pause that helps a map and also freeze a room, to see what is running towards the Gemstone Warrior. The game also has a save function, which is useful just before entering a new room: if the Gemstone Warrior is ambushed, players can give it another chance.
After killing the opponents, the Gemstone Warrior has the opportunity to search the bodies for treasures. The monsters carry arrows, and also 'magic bolts'. The latter are interesting, as they also destroy the treasure, as well as the Gemstone Warrior, if it gets too close to the explosion. Magic items abound, and help the warrior get through the caverns. Some magic items are also traps; there is a bottle of healing potion that is similar to a bottle of poison. Other magic items include effects to freeze opponents, turn the warrior invisible, hide him among monsters with an illusion, annihilate all opponents in the current cavern, and cure diseases.
