The King of Fighters: Extreme was released in 2005 to gamer’s delight as a variation of the well-known The King of Fighters fighting game franchise. This time, the popular series incorporated the popular N-Gage gaming platform, a division of the Nokia mobilephone.
The game featured several characters from the original The King of Fighters title, but with the addition of new mechanics and extensively altered character designs. It was praised for the simplicity of a mobile game that allowed players to enjoy exciting battles in short sessions.
The gameplay featured several unique mechanics to the fighting franchise; every player had a fixed amount of time to react to their opponent’s attacks in order to defend themselves. A special mechanic called ‘Mark Of Wolves’ awarded players in the lead with extra resources and benefits to be used in their current battle or stored for later use. This made for intense matches or tournaments which were a constant thrill up until the final win.
While not as graphically advanced as other games in the franchise, The King of Fighters: Extreme rendered highly detailed characters and vivid animations. It made use of the hardware limitations of the N-Gage console in order to maximize the console’s potential and bring out the most of the fighters. In addition to this, it supported versus or multiplayer gaming with support up to four players thanks to N-Gage’s unique shared-handset play.
The King of Fighters: Extreme proves to be an excellent fighting game with a great balance between its expansive array of features, visuals and hardware capability. It aims to be a classic of its own on the N-Gage console, which any fan of the original series should enjoy.
