Foxtrot Delta
Foxtrot Delta is a fun and unique edutainment game that teaches children about Australia's geography and history, as well as medical facts about major diseases.
The game puts you in the shoes of a doctor/pilot working for Australia's Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), a wonderful air medical service founded by Reverend John Flynn in 1928. As a flying doctor, your job is to help prevent outbreaks of deadly diseases by tracking the carrier to the right place in Australia, diagnosing the disease and administering the correct antidote.
The game is a combination of Carmen Sandiego and the diagnostic part of Life & Death. Once you receive an urgent radio message from the RFDS, you must take off in your plane (called 'Foxtrot Delta', hence the name of the game), travel to the correct location and start interviewing the locals to locate the carrier of the disease. In the process, you will learn bits of the history and culture of various Australian cities. The diagnostic part of the game is simpler than in Life and Death, although you still have to remember salient facts and select the right antidote.
Foxtrot Delta is, overall, an interesting and unique title that manages to teach several subjects in the same program. It's not as varied or graphically appealing as Gumboots Australia or Bushbuck Charms, Reckon's other two great educational games, but it's still worth a look.
It's also worth noting - and applauding - that part of the proceeds from the sale of this game has been donated to the RFDS. This is a great idea, which should inspire more game companies to follow suit.
