Alshark

In the early 1990s, a unique game was released on the Sharp X68000 computer system that would capture the hearts of many gamers in Japan. This game was none other than Alshark, a science fiction role-playing game (RPG) developed by Right Stuff and published by SquareSoft. Set in a futuristic world filled with diverse alien races and advanced technology, Alshark took players on an epic journey filled with thrilling battles and intriguing storytelling. One of the standout features of Alshark was its stunning graphics and smooth animations, which were considered top-notch for its time. The game utilized the powerful capabilities of the Sharp X68000 to deliver a visually impressive experience, even featuring animated cutscenes that were a rarity in RPGs at that point. The attention to detail in the game's environments and character designs added an immersive element to the gameplay, pulling players deeper into the game's sci-fi world. Aside from its graphics, Alshark was also praised for its complex and engaging gameplay. It combined traditional RPG elements such as character customization and turn-based combat with unique features like space travel and ship customization. Players could explore different planets and engage in battles with various alien enemies, while also managing their ship's resources and upgrades. This added another layer of depth to the game and kept players engaged throughout their playthrough. In terms of story, Alshark did not disappoint either. The game was set in a distant future where humans have inhabited various planets and formed alliances with different alien races. However, a mysterious and powerful enemy known as the Madancer threatens the peace and stability of this universe. As the hero, players must navigate the political landscape and uncover the truth behind the Madancer's motives while forging alliances and fighting against other factions. With a gripping storyline, impressive graphics, and engaging gameplay, it is no surprise that Alshark received widespread acclaim upon its release. It even spawned a sequel, Alshark 2, in 1993, which continued the story and expanded upon the game's features. However, Alshark remains a cult classic for many gamers who played it on the Sharp X68000, and its influence can still be felt in modern RPGs.

Fiend Hunter

Feed Sluster is a Fiend Hunter: a man who takes a job involving the elimination of mysterious beings known as fiends. One day he is contacted by a woman named Beth, who offers him a more demanding job, which involves investigating the shady activities between humans and fiends, and getting to the bottom of the whole mystery, discovering the origin of the fiends and determining their ultimate fate. Fiend Hunter is a cinematic platformer set in an old west setting with supernatural elements. With the exception of the initial town and a few other locations, the game takes place in areas that require carefully navigating a series of platform-like structures. The controls and animation resemble those of Prince of Persia. Feed can jump, run, perform a running jump, hang from ledges, climb up or down, kneel, and crawl. He also takes falling damage; the main challenge during platforming sequences is to keep him from falling. Enemies only appear at preset points; each battle is one-on-one, and it is impossible to escape a fight. This, coupled with the high number of enemy health points and varied attack patterns, makes each encounter a boss battle. Feed fights with a sword and can perform various moves, combining attacks with jumps and dodges. He can also access some magic spells. A small fire demon named Exy accompanies Feed on his journey. Exy can be used as offensive and defensive reinforcement in combat, and can also be configured to illuminate dark areas. Each enemy drops a special orb that can be used to increase Feed's vitality, attack power or magic, as well as teach Exy more powerful attacks, giving the game a slight RPG flavor. Feed can also equip rings and buy or find protective and health-restoring potions.

Flash Hiders

Flash Hiders is a 2D anime-style fighting game with a distinct RPG slant. The game focuses on story and presentation, with animated and voiced cutscenes throughout the game's scenario mode, as well as the ability to purchase and use equipment to increase your stats. The scenario mode follows martial artist Bang as he journeys through a war-torn world with the sorceress Tiria and a quasi-adopted child named Erue. 'Advance' mode lets you choose any character in the game and follow their specific story, building your character's skills as you go. Of course, there is also a two-player versus mode.

Sword Master

One night, a lonely and gloomy-looking traveler who calls himself Ax appears in a tavern on the outskirts of the castle of Satania. He meets Althea, a girl from a village whose inhabitants were slaughtered by orcs. The two travel to the castle, where they meet the king of Satania, and learn of the existence of an ancient and powerful artifact that has brought about the resurrection of a powerful demon. Ax reveals his own demonic heritage, but is willing to join forces with the people of the kingdom and fight his kinsman. . . Completely unrelated to an earlier game of the same name, Sword Master is a tactical RPG, that is, a hybrid of Japanese-style RPG and strategic battles. The player controls a small party at first, but can later command several units. Most of the game takes place on battlefields. The player manages the heroes in turns, attacking or casting magic when the enemy is within range. Attacks are presented as short, full-screen animated sequences. Characters gain experience after each attack and can level up in the midst of battle. Unlike many other games of this type, Sword Master contains an additional RPG element in the ability to navigate characters in real time through towns and other 'friendly' areas. The story progression, however, is completely linear, and the player cannot explore hostile areas.

Syd Mead's Terraforming

The TV Show

The TV Show is an action game with humor in the head, similar to Bomberman in concept. The game consists of a scenario mode (single player) and a versus mode (up to four players). Both modes offer seven characters to choose from. The characters are comic-themed and include a hyperactive schoolgirl, an armor-clad ninja, and others. There is no real story behind these characters; each comes with a brief introductory sequence that invariably leads to their admission into a TV show hosted by aliens, where they have to defeat enemies and retrieve prizes. Each scenario is an overhead screen containing the protagonist, enemies, the prize and various bombs. The bombs must be picked up and carried back and forth; they are used to deal with the enemies and explode the receptacle in which the prize is located. The green bombs change color to yellow and red when picked up, at which point they are about to explode and must be dropped to avoid damage. The bombs also make holes in the ground, and the player must pay attention not to fall through them. In addition to carrying and dropping bombs, each character has a special ability. These range from throwing projectiles at enemies to accelerating speed when riding a motorcycle, depending on the character selected.
