Conan

Conan, released in 1984 for the Commodore 64, is a game that has stood the test of time and has remained a classic among retro gaming enthusiasts. Developed by Datasoft, this action-adventure game is based on the popular character of Conan the Barbarian from the novels by Robert E. Howard. The game was well-received by players and critics alike and remains a fan favorite to this day. Players take on the role of Conan, a powerful and skilled warrior on a quest to defeat the evil wizard Thulsa Doom. The game is set in the mythical world of Hyboria and is divided into six levels, each with its own challenges and enemies. From fighting savage beasts to navigating treacherous terrain, players must use their wits and combat skills to progress through the game. One of the standout features of Conan is its stunning graphics and sound. For a game released in 1984, the graphics were remarkably detailed and colorful. The game also had a unique atmospheric soundtrack that added to the immersive experience. The attention to detail in both the graphics and sound is a testament to the quality of the game and the effort put into its development. Another aspect that sets Conan apart from other games of its time is its open-ended gameplay. Unlike many linear games of the era, Conan allowed players to explore the game's world freely and choose their own path. This added a level of replayability to the game, as players could approach each level in different ways, making each playthrough a unique experience. The combat system in Conan is also worth mentioning, as it was both challenging and satisfying. Players had to time their attacks and block incoming strikes to defeat enemies, making combat feel more realistic and engaging. Additionally, players could acquire new weapons and upgrades throughout the game, adding variety to the gameplay and making Conan a well-rounded gaming experience. One of the criticisms of Conan was its difficulty level. The game was notorious for its steep learning curve and unforgiving enemies, which could be frustrating for some players. However, the sense of accomplishment upon completing a level or defeating a boss was well worth the challenge for many players.
