Assault On Port Stanley takes place during the Falklands Wars and the player takes the role of an S.A.S. commander and has to liberate Port Stanley from the Argentine occupiers. The task is to break the enemy blockade and collect troops from a sabotage mission behind enemy lines.
The game is divided into three stages. The game begins with the player aboard a warship slowly approaching land. This section works similarly to the Beach-Head battle station sequence. The player takes control of the ship's gunship from a first-person perspective and has to shoot down enemy ships as they appear while avoiding their fire. At any time the player can take off with his helicopter and move on to the next stage, which is a 1942-style shooter. However, the helicopter has a limited amount of fuel and, therefore, the player cannot launch it too early, as it will not be enough to reach the shore. The number of waves of enemy aircraft in this section depends on how many ships the player has destroyed in the naval phase. Upon reaching the island, the third stage is launched, which takes place as River Raid. The player flies his helicopter over a canal while trying to avoid the cliffs on the sides and enemy ships and barricades. Along the banks there will be stations where the player can land to pick up men and refuel. At the end of the level the player gets bonus points for each man that has been rescued.
Tottenham midfielder Glenn Hoddle has his own game with this Amstrad exclusive soccer game. The game is played from a sideways perspective, graphically similar to the Commodore Cup Final. The control method is a little different from other soccer games, in that you simply press the fire button to select the player closest to the ball. Only single matches can be played, there are no cup or league competitions. There are three different skill levels available in the game.
