The evil and insane Dr. Ragnova is currently visiting the planet Borobodur to build a machine that has the power to destroy all technology and unleash a new dark age. Fortunately for the universe, Special Agent Johnson is on his way to set things right.
Borobodur: The Planet of Doom is a mix of genres. Most of the levels take place in side-scrolling platforming levels. The goal is to find a series of hidden objects to open the exit to the next level. However, there are two major obstacles in the way: puzzles (mostly related to switches) and enemies trying to kill Johnson. The latter problem is solved by shooting them and collecting power-ups that, for example, restore life energy or upgrade the weapon.
In other levels, the game focuses more on driving. The player controls a spaceship (the camera is behind the vehicle) and has to survive until the end. There are enemy ships to shoot at, as well as a boost function. There is also a third type of level in which the player moves blocks on a board to recreate a certain pattern within a time limit.
Mario Kart is taken a step further in this racer. The computer racers are Loretta L'Amour, the Cat-Toothed Beavers and the uncompromising Colonel Carnage, each of whom has individual looking cars, assorted weapons and some attempts at humor and pathos.
The tracks are quite long and packed with hazards and power-ups, such as oil slicks and missiles. The computer cars seem to be faster when they're behind you than when they're in front, which is odd.
The handling is deliberately arcadey, with fast acceleration and braking and the ability to brake and steer at the same time. The graphics are third-person, with a split-screen option, in the grand Mario Kart / OutRun tradition.
