Defender of The Faith

DOS 1992
Defender of The Faith is a unique action game based on the story of King David in the Bible. The game is divided into six platformer-like levels, each based on an episode in David's life, with different objectives to accomplish. As David, you will start the game as a humble shepherd who must protect his flock from wild animals. Each level is more difficult than the last, and some of them even have puzzles to solve (most of which involve figuring out what to do next, such as how to climb the ledge, etc.). The graphics aren't flashy, but they're more than adequate, and each level is different enough from the last to make you want to keep playing. What keeps the game from reaching our Top Dog status is the simplicity of the gameplay: while each level has unique objectives, the solution comes down to using the ATTACK key in new ways, rather than tackling new layers of complexity. Also, the keyboard interface is beyond difficult to use. Overall, if you like action games of various kinds and interesting (and biblical, to boot) scenarios, Defender of The Faith is worth a try. I found the game interesting enough to keep playing to see how the story develops, but not without getting my teeth into it a bit along the way ;).

Defender of the Faith: The Adventures of David

DOS 1992
A biblical game based on the chronicles of David, and his rise from humble shepherd boy to the throne of the Kingdom of Israel. The plot is divided into chapters, covering different episodes in the life of the future monarch: rescuing sheep from marauding beasts, dueling with the Philistine champion Goliath, escaping a plot against his life by King Saul, proving his good intentions to the king, boldly sneaking into the camp and taking refuge in the hills, and finally saving his family from Amalekite captivity. These levels must be completed in order, and each is staged as an action sequence with its own challenges to overcome; if David 'loses all his heart' (i. e. , his health, represented by heart icons), he fails the mission and must start over. To avoid becoming mere fun and entertainment, each level is followed by a quiz, in which multiple-choice questions test the player's biblical knowledge for extra points.
