Carmageddon is a violent car racing game in which the racing element can be as important as wrecking opponents' cars or racking up kills by ramming pedestrians. At the start, the player has only one car and is ranked 99th. The overall goal is to race to the top, collecting opponents' cars along the way as trophies (and possibly replacements for one's own vehicle). In the race itself, the player tries to damage opponents by crashing into them, and can also kill pedestrians.
Damage, kills and spectacular moves allow credits to be earned for upgrading the car and even repairing it at any time during the race. If a particular opponent's car is wrecked several times in successive races, it is added to the selection of available vehicles. There are many power-ups scattered around the tracks ranging from the useful (more speed, instant braking) to the amusing and downright absurd. While the player can win the race by finishing first, smashing everything in sight is encouraged. The game offers open environments where exploration outside of the race track is encouraged.
