ArtRageous!
ArtRageous! is a series of games and other interactive learning activities focused on art history. The learning adventure begins in a virtual plaza where the player/student can choose from a series of destinations to visit. Among the destinations are important cross-referenced databases of paintings and painter biographies.
The main attraction of ArtRageous! is the rich variety of activities present. The activities cover 5 categories of understanding and appreciating art: color, light, perspective, composition, and the life of art. The color category includes a color mixing game in which different amounts of red, blue, and yellow components must be used to build a hue/saturation color wheel. Another activity demonstrates the effect of adjusting the brightness or contrast of an image. These and other activities are complemented by narrated explanations of color concepts.
Activities related to light include a sphere with lights placed around it: click on one of the lights to understand the visual effects of different light sources. In addition, a game explaining light demonstrates how contours create shape. The player's goal is to match a series of contours to their respective images within a cluttered box.
One of the games in the perspective category involves placing a room full of floating objects where they best fit into the background of the picture. Both the picture and the objects are drawn with a 3D perspective that gives clues to the player about their placement. In addition, the player can choose to draw a grid of vanishing point lines as an aid.
The composition section demonstrates how the elements of the paintings convey meaning. A game illustrating this concept asks the player to guess which shape or concept (circle, triangle, balanced scale or unbalanced scale) best represents each of the selected paintings.
The art life category includes a puzzle game with square pieces. The player must reassemble the puzzle within a set period of time.
