The Secret Codes of C.Y.P.H.E.R.: Operation Wildlife
Tanager's C. Y. P. H. E. R. Operation Wildlife and Operation US Presidents are two wonderful games designed for children ages 8 and up that teach a range of subjects in a unique and addictive game that will keep kids and adults hooked for hours.
Both games star an undercover agent working for C. Y. P. H. E. R. (short for Courageous Young Partners in Hush-Hush Electronic Radiotelegraphy, obviously for short CYPHER ;))), a top-secret organization.
According to the game manual, C. Y. P. P. H. E. R. ' . . provides its clients with a confidential message delivery system that allows them to send secret telegrams to each other. A message, called a CYPHERGRAM, is encrypted and then divided into pieces before being sent to the city where the client is located. As the agent, your mission is to locate the pieces of the message, then decipher and deliver the CYPHERGRAM to the client'.
The game is a very nice mix of detective games, cryptography and trivia. You start each mission with 3 'contact sheets', which contain the locations of the contact agents. Their addresses are not written directly, but they are clues to the correct location. You must match the contact sheets to the correct district to contact the agents who will transmit a piece of the CYPHERGRAM to your Microscan watch. If you choose wrong, you may encounter evil L. U. R. R. K. agents. who will scare your contacts or even steal information from you. Each contact agent will also give you a clue as to which animal (or U. S. President in the sequel) you must identify. You will have to correctly identify several animals/presidents to get the whole CYPHERGRAM that you must decipher. This last segment of the game is a standard cryptography in which you must deduce the correct letters to decipher the message.
C. Y. P. H. E. R. contains many fun tools to help you in your missions. The FunCyclopedia contains a lot of information about animals/U. S. presidents, but you should not use it too much. There are also many extras that make the games even better. You can send personal CYPHERGRAM to other agents (perhaps your brother, or a friend sharing the same computer), and they will receive it in non-decoded format when they connect. If decoding the CYPHERGRAM in standard English is not challenging enough, you can choose to decode it in American Sign Language, Morse code, Braille or even Semaphore. There are four difficulty levels, including Expert, which will provide a solid challenge for adults/parents.
Overall, both C. Y. P. P. H. E. R. games are highly recommended for children and adults. You'll learn a lot of fun facts about wildlife and U. S. presidents. While honing your cryptographic and related skills. Too bad Tanager didn't make more games in the series.
