Ten Desires is the thirteenth main game in the Tōhō series and is once again a 2D vertically scrolling danmaku/bullet hell shoot'em up. The player can choose one of four characters - Reimu, Marisa, Sanae and Youmu. The action takes place after the Indefinite Fantastic Object. Gensokyo has problems with divine spirits, caused by the resurrection of a saint, Toyosatomimi no Miko. Ten Desires has typical danmaku gameplay. The chosen heroine flies forward, shoots enemies (Youmu can slash with the sword) and avoids many bullets. The game uses a bomb/life system similar to Undefined Fantastic Object, based on collecting Divine Spirits. The player can continue from the place where the character dies, but the game has a limited number of continues, similar to The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. Several of the earlier games have an unlimited number of continues, but require a complete restart of the level.
