This version of Cricket Captain lacks the ability to play the matches offered by the others. Instead, the C64 displays a scoreboard, while on the Spectrum the entire screen is used for a top-down view of the field, with lines illustrating where each shot has been played, and flash announcements of dismissals. Only balls from which a player is ejected or a run scored are shown.
No scouts, coaches or physios are hired, you simply have a standard one at all times. CPU vs. CPU matches produce a simple score instead of a full scoreboard. Minor counties do not appear; cup tournaments start from the round of 16 stage.
Some other changes have been made. Player skills on each pitch are now rated out of 10 instead of 100, but a player's bowling style and preferred bowling style for batting are now displayed. The scout now brings up information about players in a team, and then gives you the opportunity to buy one of them, instead of looking for players of a particular skill.
(Cricket captains have a much more important role than their equivalents in most sports. Most of the important tactical decisions during the match are under their control, as in this simulation, where you can play or just watch the match action. The teams are real, but the player names are fictitious.
Your options are quite similar to those of a soccer coach. You must hire a coach, a scout and a physiotherapist to enable you to train your players and keep them fit, and acquire new ones through the football-style transfer market.
You must select your team of 11 players before the match, with talented all-rounders more common than in real life. The game covers the four main tournaments of the time: a single-division league of four-day matches with no time limit, the Sunday league of one-day matches and two cup competitions.
The match view includes a plan view of the field configuration and a forced perspective view of the batter as he sets up for the shot. You must time and place your shot correctly in order to score with it. On the field you can choose the pitcher and modify the field configuration.
