Madden 96

Madden 96 is the second and final iteration of the American soccer franchise that appeared on the Game Gear. It is based closely on the previous year's game, with one major difference: it loses the NFL license, so it features only generic team names. Still, the teams, stats and schedules are based on the 1995 NFL season, with the two new expansion teams and rule changes, such as two-point conversion, included. The main game modes, Exhibition, Season and Playoffs, return unchanged from the previous game, and a new Sudden Death mode has been added. Thirty teams plus the traditional All-Madden are available. Features, controls and graphics (top-down vertical scrolling) are largely unchanged from the previous game. The main changes are the redesign of the menu system, the overhaul of the playbook, the addition of injuries and substitutions, which are now available for all positions, not just quarterbacks.

Madden NFL 95

The Madden soccer series debuts on the Game Gear with Madden NFL 95, offering a scaled-down version of the console version, with perspective, controls and options tailored to the handheld's capabilities. The game is officially licensed by the NFL for the 1994 season, so all 28 teams with accurate statistics are available for play in Exhibition, Season and Playoff modes. In addition, an All-Madden team can be used in exhibition games only. The game features selectable quarter length, timeouts, reversible plays, quarterback changes, variable weather (which can be turned off in exhibition games), optional color commentary by John Madden (called 'Maddenisms' in the menu) and detailed statistics. The game is viewed from a top-down perspective with the field scrolling vertically. During running plays and kick returns, the Game Gear's two buttons are used to perform a series of moves, either by pressing or holding the button: dives, jumps, bursts of speed and spins are possible.
